The UAE Ministry of Economy (MoE) has launched on Tuesday a nationwide campaign to uphold and protect intellectual property rights (IPR).
“This campaign is aimed at highlighting the importance of an individual’s or [a business establishment’s] rights over intellectual property and how it contributes to [national] growth,” said Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, UAE Minister of Economy.
The minister said the UAE government stands firm on its decision to quash copyright and IPR violations and promote a local business environment that is free of piracy.
“This will have a positive impact on the investment climate of the UAE and attract external investment. Aligning with the federal government’s directives to ensure a piracy-free environment, the MoE has been leading a concerted campaign against such violations in the UAE. Several raids have been conducted in cooperation with the local departments and strong action taken against piracy,” Al Mansouri emphasised.
The UAE, the minister added, has been regarded as the first nation in the Arab World to fight piracy and encourage innovation. This year, the ministry has received 621 requests to register intellectual patents from inventors, 520 other request were made by companies and corporations for import and distribution of intellectual properties.
Al Mansouri said the UAE has issued 625 industrial property patents and 179 invention certificates so far. A total of 866 requests for industrial prototypes and 2235 requests for invention certificate have also been received from 2008 to 2009.
